June 02, 2005 By: William Pensworth Hearing Protection Checklist – Check To See If You Are SafeAcknowledging the hazards of occupational noise exposure, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine focuses on hearing protection in its annual Labor Day Checklist. This hearing protection checklist offers practical suggestions for employees and employers to eliminate or reduce noise-related hazards at work. These "Tips for Protecting Hearing in the Workplace" also include recommendations for protection of hearing with respect to lifestyle and leisure activities. Hearing protection checklists highlight workplace protection tips to promote the safety of workers and workplaces. As well, checklists will help to protect hearing and health by informing the worker of workplace dangers. Hearing loss is the most widespread occupational disease in the U.S. More than 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels in their daily job, many without adequate hearing protection. Noise in excess of 85 decibels can damage hearing. If a ringing telephone alone can register up to 80 decibels, a worker running a bulldozer all day at 105 decibels with no protection is at risk. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), problems created by occupational hearing loss include impaired communication and tinnitus, which is to hear ringing in the ears. This in turn results in lower productivity. It is therefore crucial for companies to protect their staff from hearing damage It is imperative to realize that occupational hearing loss can be prevented by taking action before the employees’ hearing deficiency begins to affect his quality of life. Occupational hearing loss can affect any worker regardless of age, sex, or type of job. Protect yourself and use hearing protection checklists to guide you through noisy environments.
