May 24, 2005 By: William Pensworth Hearing Aid Implants – Study Shows Dramatic ResultsResearch on hearing loss issues show that expanding the criteria for cochlear implants is certainly warranted. Older people with hearing aid implants find a significant increase in speech perception and improvement in listening quality. Studies indicate that the duration of deafness and age of implantation are important factors for the success for this hearing aid implant. Consequently, many believed that these hearing aids would not provide a significant impact in overall communication abilities for the congenitally deaf.
Little research has been done to assess the efficiency of cochlear implants at a delayed age for the hard of hearing. A recent study entitled "Delayed Implantation of Congenitally Deaf Children and Adults" indicates that the criteria for providing congenitally deaf people with this assistive listening device should be reassessed. The study was focused on congenitally deaf adults and children with implant aids. Standard preoperative and postoperative audiometry and speech perception tests were conducted. The evaluations revealed that majority of the adults with devices showed improvement in word identification, sentence recognition, and the ability to hear in the presence of noise. All used the listening device on a regular basis and endorsed that the implanted hearing aid helped their communication skills. The children with these implant aids also demonstrated significant improvement on a variety of audiological tests. Based upon these results, the researchers suggest that profoundly hearing impaired persons can obtain substantial speech benefits after receiving this hearing device. These researchers endorse the expansion of the criteria to include congenitally hearing impaired children and adults for hearing implantation.
